METRO is providing free bus trips in the affected areas while portions of Houston’s light rail lines are closed for cleaning and repairs over the weekend.
From the Northline Transit Center/Houston Community College station, which is the northernmost terminus of the METRORail red line, to the Downtown Transit Center station, it is closed. Before coming to a conclusion in the vicinity of NRG Park, the line continues south past the Museum District and Texas Medical Center.
From the Theater District station downtown to the EaDo/Stadium station immediately east of downtown, the green and purple lines are closed. To the east and southeast, such lines continue.
METRO, the public transit agency for the Houston area, said the shutdown, which started Thursday morning, will last until Sunday.
“Therefore, if people want to use it for their commute on Monday morning, it will be operational again,” METRO spokesperson Chelsey Trahan stated.

According to a news release from METRO, the lines are partially closed for routine maintenance, including expanding joint and concrete repairs on two bridges, replacing rails and welding a length of track, removing graffiti, and thoroughly cleaning rail stations, canopies, and platforms. In the interest of “safety, cleanliness, and long-term reliability,” METRO is carrying out the maintenance.
According to METRO, a free two-way bus shuttle service will be offered in the affected neighborhoods throughout the shutdown. The buses will operate every ten minutes.
In a related move, METRO will open a new rail maintenance facility that will service all three lines on Monday morning.
This weekend, drivers in Houston will be affected by another METRO closure. Due to ongoing construction and maintenance operations, the transportation agency will be closing the HOV/HOT lanes on Interstate 45 North and I-45 South from Friday evening until Sunday.
