Teen shot, injured by Houston police officer during gunfire exchange, chief says

According to police chief Noe Diaz, a teenager was shot and injured during a gunfight with a Houston Police Department officer late Thursday.

Around 9:43 p.m. on Thursday, officers in the 3700 block of Liberty Drive saw what they thought was a drug exchange between two individuals.

The teenage lads allegedly started to run away on foot as uniformed officers drove up in a marked patrol car. According to Diaz, officers got out of the police car and ordered them to slow down.

He claimed that a cop who had a revolver in his waist was able to apprehend the culprit. There was a momentary battle. The young man managed to escape the policeman. Then that young man kept running up the street.

The teenager allegedly turned and fired two shots while he was running. The boy was hit multiple times in the upper torso by an officer who returned fire.

The teen received first aid and a tourniquet from the officers. According to Diaz, while authorities were giving first aid, the second person engaged in the altercation fled.

On Thursday night, the injured teenager, who is said to be between the ages of 15 and 16, was in stable condition.

According to department rules, the eight-year veteran police officer who fired the bullets was placed on administrative leave.

The homicide squad from the police department and the district attorney’s office were present at the scene conducting the investigation.
