The new 621 area code for HoustonStarting on January 23, 2025, the fifth area code to serve the greater Houston area will go into service.
The Public Utility Commission of Texas authorized the new code in October 2023 to account for “continued population growth.” Existing phone numbers won’t be impacted, however providers will start allocating 621 numbers to new lines after all available 281/346/713/832 numbers have been used.
By 2025, the city would run out of new phone numbers, according to a previous PUCT forecast. For the following nine years, the new area code is expected to support all new phone numbers in the Houston region.
The new area code was described by Governor Greg Abbott as “a testament to the economic strength and quality of life in the greater Houston area.”
In 1947, Houston was first assigned the original area code, 713. Since 346 in 2013, this will be the first new area code to be implemented.
