Houston airports reach new milestone, surpassing 63 million travelers in 2024

In 2024, the Houston Airport System, which includes Hobby Airport and Bush Intercontinental Airport, handled a city record 63.1 million passengers.

The airport system reports that 3 million more people traveled through Houston’s airports last year than did so in 2023, when 60.1 million people did so. Additionally, the airports handled over 550,000 metric tons of cargo in 2024, a 0.1% decrease from the record quantity seen in 2022.

The economic impact analysis of the airport system estimates that the overall economic benefit of the airports to the region is $40.6 billion.

In a statement, Houston Airports Director of Aviation Jim Szczesniak said, “Houston’s airports are setting new records and proving to be a driving force behind the region’s economic growth.” “With 63.1 million passengers in 2024, we’re boosting employment, helping companies, and enhancing Houston’s standing as a top tourism and business destination. Strong momentum is indicated by these record-breaking figures as we get ready to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The airport system reported a 99% reduction in total severe traffic, despite the rise in travelers. According to the airport system, this decrease was made possible by the installation of a new arrivals curb at Bush Intercontinental Airport in north Houston, as well as by improved customer service and the use of a cashless payment system.

The average traffic wait during the Christmas holiday season was lowered from 5.4 hours to 2 minutes, according to the airport system.

“Our goal was to deliver a seamless journey during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year,” said Szczesniak. “The results show that our investments in infrastructure, technology and customer service are paying off.”

Bush had 48.4 million passengers overall, compared to 14.6 million at Hobby in south Houston, when broken down by airport. There were roughly 13.1 million international passengers and 50 million domestic passengers at both airports.

Among the most visited foreign countries were Mexico, with 5 million visitors, up 3% from 2023, and Central and South America, with 3.6 million, up 9% from 2023.
