Houston LULAC council criticizes immigration policy changes from Trump administration

The Trump administration’s recent changes to immigration policy have drawn criticism from the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) council in Houston as well as other local groups.

President of the LULAC council in the Houston region, Sergio Lira, stated Friday that he and other community members are affected by the immigration-related executive orders that President Donald Trump has signed since taking office on January 20.

We are not elected representatives. According to Lira, we are the center of our community. We experience the anguish and suffering of immigrants because we live in these neighborhoods.

The White House announced Wednesday that Trump intends to keep 30,000 high-priority criminal aliens who are illegally in the country at a migrant holding facility at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The plan is a shameful and dangerous escalation, according to Linda Morales, a member of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, an advocacy group for Latino workers and union members.

It is not only morally repugnant, but also a breach of our values of justice and dignity, according to Morales, to treat those seeking asylum as criminals and house them in an institution known for violating human rights.

Guantanamo Bay will house the most egregious criminal immigrants, according to the Trump administration. Additionally, the Trump administration has stated in the past that they view everyone in the United States who does not have legal status as a criminal.

The president of Houston Millennials, a local professional network for millennials in the area, Ivan Sanchez, claimed that the wording of the Trump administration is altering what constitutes a criminal.

According to Sanchez, “the Trump administration has created a crisis in which he has blurred the lines between hardcore criminal rapists and undocumented immigrants.”
