On Saturday, February 22, 38 teams representing almost 450 Special Olympics Kentucky athletes will play in the 2025 Special Olympics Kentucky Region 2 Basketball Tournament at Sports of All Sorts in Florence.
The teams will all be trying to get tickets to the State Basketball Tournament, which will take place in Louisville from March 8–9. Eleven of the 38 teams that competed in the Region 2 Tournament’s ten divisions will automatically qualify for the State Tournament. The Special Olympics Kentucky Region 2 Basketball Tournament is the biggest in its history.
There will be one division championship match during the Tournament’s opening time slot, and competition will begin on four courts at 9 a.m. As early as noon, other championship games will commence. At 6 p.m., the tournament’s last game of the day will begin. The tournament will feature 17 teams from Northern Kentucky. Teams from Winchester, Richmond, Lexington, Georgetown, and Frankfort will join them.
Prior to the State Basketball Tournament, Special Olympics Kentucky hosts three regional basketball tournaments, including the Region 2 Tournament. The others took place in Elizabethtown and Bowling Green on February 1st.
One of the most well-liked Special Olympics Kentucky sports programs in the state is basketball. Nearly 1,300 athletes are participating statewide on 116 teams this year. The numbers are program records for both the team and the athlete. Prior to the State Basketball Tournament in March, teams participate in leagues, invitational tournaments, and regional competitions across the state. Teams progress to the State Tournament based on their performance in regional tournaments.
The Team Skills Competition, which is also held in Louisville in conjunction with the State Tournament, provides an alternative for teams that do not make it to the State Tournament.
Toyota Motor Corporation, Texas Roadhouse, and Special Olympics Kentucky Year-Round Partners Jersey Mike’s Subs are the sponsors of the Region 2 Basketball Tournament.
