At the University of Kentucky’s Lancaster Aquatics Center, Notre Dame finished second in the girls swimming and diving state championship meet on Saturday, led by a senior and a freshman.
With 371 points, Louisville Sacred Heart maintained its lead as the girls’ team champion, while Notre Dame finished second with 249 points. In the 500 freestyle, Notre Dame freshman Clare Herfel won the lone local event with a time of 4:51.22, and her senior teammate Sadie Hartig finished second.
In another event, Hartig and Herfel earned double points for the Pandas by finishing third and fourth in the 200 freestyle. They both competed for Notre Dame, which finished second in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Highlands placed third in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, Ryle senior Reese Yauger placed third in the 100 butterfly, and Notre Dame junior Savannah Bien placed third in the 1-meter diving at the state event.
With 481.5 points, Louisville St. Xavier once again led the boys state meet in scoring. In the boys’ standings, Highlands finished sixth with 118 points, while Ryle came in third with 181.
In the boys’ events, Ryle junior Chase Knauf placed second in the 500 freestyle, Highlands senior Griffin Barlow placed second in the 100 breaststroke, and Ryle senior Andy Pleiman placed second in the 50 freestyle.
The Raiders, who had the highest combined team score in both the boys’ and girls’ events at the state competition, also saw Pleiman take third in the 100 freestyle.
Highlands placed third in the 200 medley relay, Ryle placed third in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, Beechwood junior Cono Presti placed third in the 500 freestyle, and Simon Kenton junior Isaiah Reinhardt placed third in the 1-meter diving.
