Another cold snap will bring freezing temperatures to Houston next week, NWS says

Over the weekend, Southeast Texas will see another round of cold fronts that will bring temperatures below freezing.

Following a rainy Wednesday, temperatures will continue to trend cool into the weekend. The Brazos Valley and Piney Woods regions are predicted to experience freezing temperatures again on Sunday morning due to a leading cold blast that is predicted to arrive Saturday afternoon.

Monday and Tuesday will see the arrival of another wave of cold air and frigid temperatures. According to preliminary forecasts, temperatures in the Houston area might drop as low as 26 degrees late Monday and 24 degrees on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service says the cold snap early next week may bring the coldest air of the season to Southeast Texas, with hard freezes perhaps reaching Interstate 10 and even closer to the coast.

According to a NWS weather update, a weather system may sweep over the region and bring the chance of frozen or freezing precipitation late Monday into Tuesday, in addition to this arctic air incursion. The likelihood of snow, sleet, or freezing rain is far less likely, but the cold air prediction is more confident.

According to NWS, it is also possible that this weather system will develop too far away from the region to produce any precipitation across southeast Texas.

The chilly snap follows the first freezing temperatures of the year, which occurred in the Houston area more than a week ago when temperatures dropped below 32 degrees.

The Houston forecast failed to achieve the critical temperature of 24 degrees or 15 degrees with wind chill for two hours in a row, which would have prompted the city to activate warming facilities, even though temperatures had reached dangerous levels.
