In the Democratic primary, Bayonne Councilwoman Jacqueline Weimmer will run alongside incumbent Barbara McCann Stamato (D-Jersey City) for the Democratic nomination for State Assembly in the 31st district.
The three-term Jersey City mayor and gubernatorial candidate Steve Fulop will back the two.
In the 31st district, Hudson County Commissioner Jerry Walker and Assemblyman William Sampson (D-Bayonne) are supported by the Hudson County Democratic organization.
“We are running a policy-driven campaign because we know that policies have a direct impact on New Jerseyans every day,” Fulop added. Jackie and Barbara have the fortitude, compassion, and unwavering will to change people’s lives. The people, not the political apparatus, should be the government’s priority.
In 2023, McCann Stamato was chosen as the Democratic municipal chair of Jersey City. In 2022, Weimmer was chosen to serve as the Bayonne City Council’s 2nd Ward representative on Mayor Jimmy Davis’s slate. On a slate backed by the HCDO, Davis is anticipated to run for Hudson County sheriff; incumbent Frank Schillari is being backed by Team Fulop.
Jersey City is home to 59% of the 31st district’s registered Democrats, followed by Bayonne (28%), Kearny (13%), and Jersey City itself.
In accordance with a long-standing arrangement that the mayor of Bayonne chooses one of the Assembly seats, Sampson attended the Assembly four years ago when Davis ousted Majority Whip Nicholas Chiaravalloti (D-Bayonne), a choice approved by the HCDO.
