City of Houston to resume trash pickup Thursday after winter weather delays

After being halted for three days owing to a federal holiday and two days of dangerous weather, trash pickup in Houston will resume on Thursday.

The residential collection service for the City of Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department has been rescheduled through Sunday, January 26. Because Monday was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the city did not collect garbage. A “once-in-a-generation” snow blizzard then hit the area, causing non-emergency city services to be suspended for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The city has announced that yard waste collection, curbside recycling, and tree waste collection will not resume until the following week.

On Thursday, garbage collection will resume, although it will happen on an irregular timetable.

Below is the updated garbage pickup schedule from the city:

  • Thursday, Jan. 23

Monday’s scheduled garbage routes and heavy trash is expected to be serviced and all solid waste facilities and offices will reopen.

  • Friday, Jan. 24

Tuesday’s garbage routes and heavy trash is expected to be serviced.

  • Saturday, Jan. 25

Thursday’s scheduled garbage routes and heavy trash is expected to be serviced.

  • Sunday, Jan. 26

Friday’s scheduled garbage routes and heavy trash is expected to be serviced.

Heavy trash pickup delays unrelated to weather have drawn concern from the Solid Waste Management Department. More than 30,000 calls about significant garbage pickup delays have been made to Houston 311 in the last 12 months.
