In the contest for his former position, former Governor Jon Corzine has taken sides. On December 31, he gave $5,800 to Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s campaign for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
There is a strong field of Democrats from New Jersey vying for the nomination. I think the congresswoman has the best chance of winning, so that’s my option. Corzine told the New Jersey Globe that her communication skills are excellent and her service record is hard to beat. In order to restore and reset the party’s voice in New Jersey, 2025 is crucial, thus I will be rooting for whoever wins the primary.
Corzine’s $17,400 contribution to Sherrill’s campaign to replace term-limited Governor Phil Murphy includes matching contributions.
Sherrill received $5,800 from his former State Senate campaign account, which was donated by his predecessor, former Governor Richard J. Codey. Codey was one of Sherrill’s first supporters.
Corzine, who now resides in New York, was once a prolific donor to Democratic candidates and county party groups. Since losing reelection to Republican Christopher Christie in 2009, he has contributed comparatively little to state campaigns.
In the 2017 primary and general elections, Corzine gave $5,300 to Murphy, a Goldman Sachs colleague, and his wife, Sharon, gave $4,900 to Murphy’s reelection in 2021. He donated $2,500 to the 2016 campaign of the wife of retired New Jersey Supreme Court Justice John Wallace for mayor of Washington Township, and $1,000 to Democrats Brian Magrogan and Jennifer Margolis in their 2024 bids for Woodcliff Lake council.
The former governor has persisted in supporting federal Democrats, such as Tammy Murphy for the U.S. Senate and last year’s congressional candidates Sue Altman and Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman. However, prior to this year, he had never made a donation to Sherrill.
