Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly), like Steve Fulop and Steve Sweeney, will not attend tonight’s voting in Mercer County because he believes the outcome is predetermined and will not participate in Democratic county conventions.
“I have a simple rule: I won’t enter any restaurants where I know I’m going to be beaten up,” he remarked. I will continue to meet with folks around our wonderful state and express my gratitude to the members of our Democratic committee.
Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair), Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, and Sean Spiller, the head of the New Jersey Education Association and a former Montclair mayor, are now in a three-way contest tonight. The stakes are lesser because there are no county organization lines.
Gottheimer declared that he would go straight to the electorate to fight.
I’ve visited every county in the state since I started my campaign, speaking to people in diners about how costly Jersey is and how my Tax Cut Plan will help address our affordability issue. Five-term congressman Gottheimer announced that he was starting the next leg of his Jersey Diner Tour, which will be centered on tax cuts and expense reductions. Speaking with our families directly is the best method to comprehend the difficulties they are facing and find solutions to their issues.
With the support of Democratic County Chair Janice Mironov, County Executive Dan Benson, Hamilton Mayor Jeff Martin, as well as numerous county and local elected officials and Democratic municipal chairmen, Sherrill is the clear favorite in Mercer.
She will require 60% to keep the organization’s slogan from being used by another candidate and 50% to win on the first ballot and avoid a runoff.
