It’s not too late for people in the Houston area who haven’t decorated their Christmas tree yet and would rather pick, cut down, and decorate their own evergreen this year.

Real Christmas trees, which have been found to be more environmentally friendly than fake trees, alleviate holiday-related mental weariness, and add a natural scent to your home, are grown and sold by a number of nearby farms on Houston’s outskirts. They are also completely biodegradable.

According to a study from West Virginia University, trees help lessen noise and mental strain for shoppers before Christmas, much like the benefits of an urban forest.

Christmas tree farms can be found at the following locations in Houston:

Martin Farms, roughly 67 miles northwest of downtown Houston, has already had its Christmas trees shorn and topped. The farm sells Virginia pines that are grown on the property as well as Fraser firs that are hauled in from North Carolina.

Harvestable trees will be scarcer than in past years, therefore Martin Farms will send in even more Fraser firs this year.

According to Martin Farms’ website, “two years of severe drought savaged our fields of both full grown and seedlings.” For two consecutive years, hundreds of fully grown trees and nearly every seedling perished.

Although it will take four more years for the seedlings planted in January 2024 to reach the appropriate height, the website notes that the good news is that they have a very high survival rate.

Harvesting of trees started on November 29. Martin Farms, located at 1772 Hwy. 159 in East Bellville, is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
