A 15-year-old Pearland ISD student named Aubrey Daniels will go to Switzerland early next year to compete in the renowned Prix de Lausanne, an international dance competition that selects its 2025 contestants from 22 different nations.
This is the first time a dancer from the Houston area has been chosen to compete in nine years.
“I’m just so happy to be there because ever since I was a little kid I’ve watched the Prix de Lausanne like how people watch the Olympics, and to be selected and dance on that very same stage is just so surreal to me,” Daniels stated.
The 53rd annual festival, which showcases dancers between the ages of 15 and 18, has chosen 86 young dancers from around the globe, including Daniels. In addition to her hectic class schedule at Dawson High School, she is practicing for the tournament in February for 20 hours a week.
Daniels attends school full-time, in contrast to many young ballerinas. She attends pre-AP and advanced placement programs and represents Pearland ISD as a student ambassador.
Selected dancers in Lausanne will get scholarships and apprenticeships, which may include jobs with the American Ballet Theater, the Royal Ballet, or the Paris National Conservatory of Music and Dance. Daniels is optimistic that she can secure one of those nine places.
“I’m hoping to become a professional ballerina at either a U.S. or European ballet company,” she stated. However, I am aware that my life will not be a one-dimensional experience. There is still something in the medical field that interests me.
Lausanne, Switzerland, will host the Prix de Lausanne from February 2–9.
