Houston area freeze warning in place through Monday morning, NWS says

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning that will last until 9 a.m. Monday in the Greater Houston area.

Overnight, when an Arctic freeze crept into southeast Texas, local temperatures dropped into the low 30s. Temperatures dropped as low as 25 degrees in a few Houston areas to the north and northwest. On Monday, a cold weather alert warning of wind chills below freezing will be in effect until 11 a.m. By Monday afternoon, temperatures will have risen into the lower 40s before falling overnight once more.

The Texas Electric Reliability Council on Sunday issued a weather watch for the whole state from Monday through Friday in advance of the freeze. Over the course of the week, the weather watch warns of increased demand for electricity and the possibility of reduced supplies. According to a press release from ERCOT, grid conditions are anticipated to stay normal.

According to the press statement, the organization is keeping an eye on the situation and will use every tool at its disposal to control the grid.

According to CenterPoint Energy’s power outage tracking map, almost 18,000 customers in the Houston area have had their power restored in the past 24 hours. About 1,800 people were without power as a result of 71 outages that were reported at 8 a.m. on Monday.

Preparations for possible winter weather events that could result in high energy consumption and strain the electric system were discussed in December by CenterPoint, ERCOT, and the utility company’s industrial partners.

Ahead of the 2025 winter season, CenterPoint will prepare by coordinating emergency plans with grid operators and inspecting cold-weather equipment.
