Internal poll shows dead heat in Plainfield mayoral primary

Richard Wyatt, a contender for the Democratic candidacy for mayor of Plainfield, leads three-term incumbent Adrian Mapp by 4.4 points, 34.5% to 30.1%, in a statistical dead heat, according to an internal poll he conducted.

According to the Blueprint Polling survey, Mapp’s support is 42.5% to 41.3%, while Wyatt’s support is 47.9% to 9.6% for the city councilman.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka leads New Jersey Education Association President and former Montclair Mayor Sean Spiller by 32% to 7% in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, according to Plainfield voters. In line with recent surveys in the Democratic gubernatorial campaign, more than half of Plainfield Democrats (50.6%) remain unsure.

Mapp’s present position may have been influenced by the criticism his government has received for a number of programs and managerial choices. According to a polling document, Putin faces an uphill battle as he looks to win another term because of his inability to engage with citizens and solve their problems. Even if Mapp might still have some support, the polls indicate that it might not be sufficient to help him win, particularly in light of Wyatt’s advantageous position.

Wyatt lost to Mapp by a mere 269 votes four years ago while he was sprinting off the line. Mapp defeated incumbent Sharon Robinson-Briggs by 1,037 votes in 2013 and won by 630 votes in 2017, a 21-point margin. The Union County Democratic chairman, Assemblyman Jerry Green (D-Plainfield), supported Mapp in that contest.

With a sample size of 289 potential Democratic primary voters and a margin of error of +/- 5.77%, the survey was carried out between February 10 and 14.

FiveThirtyEight placed the Democratic polling firm Blueprint Polling #56 out of 282 polling firms; the Rutgers-Eagleton Poll is ranked #65 for comparison.
