Today was the death of Cresskill Mayor Benedict Romeo. He was seventy-seven.
Since 1999, Romeo, a Republican, has served as mayor.
In order to serve his unexpired term, which expires on December 31, 2027, special primary and general elections will need to be held this year due to his passing. Three names will be submitted by Cresskill Republicans for an interim successor, who may choose one of them.
Three Republicans and three Democrats make up the current borough council. This year, one incumbent from each party is running for reelection.
