Northern Kentucky Chamber recognizes Boone County Sheriff Mike Helmig with Community Award

At its Eggs N Issues event on February 18, the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce (NKY Chamber) gave Boone County Sheriff Mike Helmig the NKY Community Award.

In order to honor their beneficial contributions to the community, the award is given to people, companies, or organizations across the Northern Kentucky Metro area.

Sheriff Helmig has been in Boone County for almost 30 years, having started out as a sheriff’s deputy in 1982 and rising to the position of sheriff in 1997. He collaborated with Judge/Executive Gary Moore while serving as sheriff to finalize the merger of the Walton Police Department, the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, and the Boone County Police Department. He is also a board member of the Northern Kentucky Drug Strike Force, which collaborates with local law enforcement and community organizations on drug enforcement, and he helped establish and grow the School Resource Officers program in the school systems.

According to Brent Cooper, President and CEO of the NKY Chamber, Sheriff Helmig has played a significant role in maintaining neighborhood safety for many years. There are numerous regions and spaces to take into account when thinking about community safety. Sheriff Helmig has been instrumental in establishing a SWAT unit to handle high-risk or uncommon situations and in bringing more safety resources to our schools. He even contributed to ensuring that Police Social Workers are on hand to assist locals in accessing the right resources and support. We are happy to give him the Community Award in recognition of all the hard work he has done as sheriff.

In December 2024, Sheriff Helmig declared his intention to retire in April.
