Northern Kentucky University names Dr. Brandon Thompson as new vice president of student affairs

Brandon Thompson, Ed.D., was named the next vice president of student affairs at Northern Kentucky University on Tuesday.

Thompson, a 15-year veteran of higher education, will strive to improve the online and on-campus educational experience for students.

According to NKU Provost Diana McGill, Brandon’s dedication to student achievement and all-encompassing assistance exemplifies the kind of leadership that is crucial at this crucial juncture in higher education and at NKU. As we work to improve the NKU experience, I have no doubt that his enthusiasm for student-centered participation will be extremely helpful.

At the University of Kentucky, Thompson presided over the offices of Fraternity and Sorority Life, Religious and Spiritual Life, Student Organization and Activities, and the Office of Family and Civic Engagement, which he assisted in founding in January 2025. He was previously the Associate Dean of Student Engagement. Thompson had a variety of student life-related positions at Eastern Kentucky University, Kansas State University, East Carolina University, and Eastern Illinois University before joining UK.

Dr. Thompson states, “I am honored to stand alongside NKU in expanding on the amazing work being done to create a student-ready institution, and I look forward to working across the campus to further this mission.” Drawing inspiration from the mentors and family members who have steered me and acknowledging the critical role that support and teamwork play in accomplishing our objectives, I am dedicated to providing strong leadership that prioritizes student success and well-being as we navigate the constantly changing landscape of higher education.

Thompson received his B.A. in Communication Studies and M.S. in College Student Affairs from Eastern Illinois University, as well as his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Eastern Kentucky University.
