In one of three state qualifying meets on Saturday, the Notre Dame girls won four of eleven swimming events. They will go into the state championship meet with the quickest time in the girls 200 freestyle relay.
At the state qualifying competition for Regions 7-9, which was held at Scott High School, the Pandas won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.40. The 24 qualifiers do not include Sacred Heart, the team that won that event at the state competition last year.
Clare Herfel, a Notre Dame teammate, won the 200 freestyle at the girls qualifying meet, while she and Sadie Hartig finished first and second in the 500 freestyle. Notre Dame’s triumph in the 400-meter freestyle relay marked its conclusion.
Ryle won the 200 freestyle relay, and five local swimmers won individual events at the boys’ qualifying competition for Regions 7-9 at Scott. Seniors Griffin Barlow of Highlands and Chase Knopf of Ryle both set the second-fastest state qualifying speeds in the 100 breaststroke and 500 freestyle, respectively.
The Lancaster Aquatics Center at the University of Kentucky will host the state swimming and diving championships from February 20 to 22. Based on the results of the state qualifying meet, the following list of events include local swimmers and divers among the top three seeds.
