A guy involved in a hit-and-run accident in west Houston was shot and hurt by police early on Sunday morning after he allegedly turned toward them after getting out of his car with a gun, according to officials.
Just before three in the morning on Sunday, officers were called to the scene of a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Richmond Avenue and Hillcroft Street. Police found a motorist still seated inside a car that had been left at the crash site when they arrived.
During a news appearance on Sunday, Assistant Chief Wyatt Martin stated that officers came to check on him and the accident. It was at that moment that the driver got out of his car, and he did so while holding a gun.
The man allegedly received orders from officers to put down the gun. Martin claimed that after the victim disobeyed their orders, they shot him and hit him in the lower extremities as he turned to face them.
According to him, the unnamed man, who is approximately 40 years old, was brought to the hospital on Sunday and was still in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
The accident’s cause was still being looked at by police. When police came, the other car involved in the collision was nowhere to be seen.
Neither of the two officers who were shot was hurt. Police will watch video from surrounding security cameras and speak with witnesses who stayed on the site on Sunday.
Martin remarked of the individual, “We don’t know that he ever discharged his weapon.” His hand on the officer’s body-worn cameras makes it quite evident.
Unless otherwise required by law, the Houston Police Department routinely discloses body camera footage of officer-involved shootings and officer-involved civilian death occurrences in accordance with a 2022 policy and to uphold transparency with the public.
Within 30 days following the occurrence, such films are uploaded to the police department’s YouTube channel.
While the inquiry is ongoing, the cops who were involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duty.
Although the suspect was hurt as a result of his activities, we are grateful that this is the worst that happened to him and that he will hopefully fully recover, Martin said.
