Rodent sightings at a Houston ISD middle school prompt safety concerns

Superintendent Mike Miles said on Monday that rats have been seen at a Houston ISD middle school in Montrose, but he also stated that the district is adhering to its pest control protocols.

According to Houston TV station ABC13, employees at Lanier Middle School claim that the campus has been plagued by a rodent problem since Thanksgiving, which is affecting their ability to do their jobs.

Miles, who was named by the state to head HISD in 2023, acknowledged the problem.

Miles stated, “The maintenance team is on it,” and they are “doing what they can to ensure that we have pest control procedures in place.”

The district is concentrating on caulking access sites, setting traps, and continuing surveillance, an HISD representative noted. Every impacted area is closely watched to make sure it complies with safety and health regulations. HISD is steadfast in its resolve to immediately handle insect problems because it recognizes how important it is to prioritize a safe and healthy environment for both staff and students.

However, when asked if rodents have been discovered on other campuses or if any staff members or students have become ill as a result of being around rodents or their droppings, HISD did not reply. Additionally, the district did not respond to inquiries about the presence of rodents in the cafeteria or kitchen of the school.

Regarding rat sightings on campus, Miles stated on Monday that he was “not sure” if parents of Lanier pupils had been notified.
