Sherrill seeks additional $2.4 million in matching funds

In an effort to obtain an extra $2.4 million in matching money under the state’s gubernatorial public financing program, Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) has reported an additional $1.2 million in donations to the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission.

Sherrill has applied for matching money twice; on January 30, she was awarded $1,435,481.

Sherrill would get about $3.8 million if her entire application is accepted; the public finance ceiling is $5.4 million.

“We’re encouraged by the outpouring of support we’re seeing from rank-and-file Democrats, grassroots organizations, and donors who are pitching in to support a different kind of leadership to Trenton,” said Alex Ball, Sherrill’s campaign manager, adding that the momentum for Mikie is spreading throughout New Jersey. Voters are responding favorably to Mikie’s message, and we are forming the alliance necessary to win and shield New Jersey from Trump’s perilous agenda.

On Monday night, former Governor Jon Corzine held a fundraiser for Sherrill that raised roughly $150,000. The event’s total value, including matching donations, is about $450,000. A portion of the money raised at the Corzine event is part of the $1.2 million match submission. Those present were New York City power couple Victor and Sarah Kovner, as well as Orin Kramer, who was previously one of the most influential Democratic fundraisers in New Jersey.

Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly) received $3,268,572 in matching contributions, former Senate President Steve Sweeney received $3,242,743, and Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop received $2,466,523.
