Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) defeated Newark Mayor Ras Baraka 224-133, a 55%-33% margin, to win the Mercer County Democratic convention tonight. With 47 votes (12%), Sean Spiller, a former mayor of Montclair and president of the New Jersey Education Association, came in third.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly), former Senate President Steve Sweeney, and Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop were the other three candidates who chose not to attend the Mercer convention.
Sherill defeated Baraka in Hunterdon, which brings us to the second Democratic convention of the year.
