Snow, sleet blankets Houston area Tuesday morning, shutting down roadways

Residents in Southeast Texas woke up to snow-covered yards for the first time in almost four years.

On Tuesday morning, as a mixture of snow and sleet began to build up, emergency officials advised motorists to avoid the roadways. Before the sun dawned, Houstonians celebrated the unusual weather on social media.

According to National Weather Service meteorologist Janet Maldanado, the strongest combination of wintry weather is probably not going to arrive until approximately nine in the morning.

According to Maldonado, the region is waking up to a combination of precipitation this morning. There have been reports of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Thus, there is a lot of snow in several places, namely north of I-10.

Heavy sleet and snow clung to the roads, forcing Houston Transtar to close roads and elevated routes from the Brazos Valley down to Galveston County. You can find a complete list of roads impacted by ice buildup here.

CenterPoint Energy’s power outage tracker map shows that at 7 a.m. Tuesday, there were about 56 power outages recorded throughout Southeast Texas.
