SSDI recipients get an average payment of about $1,539. That is the latest figure unveiled by the Social Security Administration as of August 2024. A COLA increase is what millions of Americans on benefits expect, but will it be possible?
So far, all signs point to a smaller COLA increase for all Social Security recipients. Therefore, you should expect a lower boost than in 2024. Bear in mind that the increase is the same percentage for retirees, SSI, and SSDI recipients.
Latest projection for the 2025 COLA affecting SSDI recipients
According to the Senior Citizens League, there could be a 2.5% COLA increase. This latest projection is lower than the previous figure given the previous month. Hence, it continues decreasing as inflation cools down.
Therefore, SSDI beneficiaries could get some extra money from January 2025 onward. Bear in mind that despite the fact it will be announced next month, benefits will not increase until next year.
Only SSI recipients will receive their January payment on December 31, 2024, because January 1 is a Federal holiday. What is more, SSDI’s payment schedule for January will have the following paydays:
Fresh Federal Resources at Your Distinction to Assist Local Students
- Disability Insurance payment on January 3, 2025: on SSI and SSDI at the same time or recipients who got benefits before May 1997
- Disability Insurance payment on January 8, 15, and 22: birthdays from 1-10, 11-20, or 21-31 respectively
How much may SSDI recipients get after the Social Security COLA increase?
This will depend on how large your Disability Insurance payment is. The larger it is, the bigger the increase will seem to be. For example, if you receive an average payment of $1,539, it could become about $1,577.
That means Social Security Disability Insurance recipients could get about $38 extra. In one year, that increase will be about $461. So, it is a great boost despite being low.
Those who just received an SSDI payment worth $1,000, may receive about $1,025. If it were $500, your benefit would become $512 after the 2025 COLA.
