Steve Sweeney, the Democratic candidate for governor, wants to spend $1 billion to give each New Jersey family earning no more than $150,000 a $400 one-time check.
According to Sweeney, a former Senate President, “our residents need relief because Donald Trump is sticking it to the middle class by rolling back lower prescription drugs for seniors and pushing tariffs that raise prices on everyday products.” This is necessary to support New Jersey’s working population.
About 2.5 million New Jerseyans would receive direct assistance under Sweeney’s plan, he adds, to help working families deal with growing household expenses including increased egg prices and significant utility bill increases. According to him, the state can still pay pensions and support public education while still affording the refund.
Although having a bigger surplus would be advantageous, Sweeney noted that the state has previously made do with less when citizens were not as financially burdened as they are now. Instead of revealing ambitious plans, let’s concentrate on providing urgent assistance to those in need in New Jersey.
Sweeney has pledged to adopt his plan as soon as he takes office if the legislature and Governor Phil Murphy don’t this year.
