Tennessee Titans to again wear Oilers uniforms during home game against Houston Texans

The atmosphere for Sunday’s NFL game in Nashville, Tennessee, will be distinctly Houston.

During Sunday’s regular-season finale versus the Houston Texans, the Tennessee Titans, who were originally the Houston Oilers before the team moved following the 1996 season, will don Oilers throwback uniforms. This week, the Titans’ social media ambitions were made public. The team’s profile photo on the X platform has the Oilers’ recognizable red, white, and Columbia Blue derrick insignia.

Speaking to reporters in Nashville on Wednesday, Titans defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons admitted that the team’s uniform selection is probably going to cause resentment among Texans and Houston football fans.

“It’s our job not to get embarrassed in those uniforms,” Simmons stated. “I’m sure that the Texans would love to embarrass us in that uniform, especially (considering) what we did earlier this year to them.”

On Nov. 24 in Houston, the Titans, who have a 3-13 record that is tied for the worst in the NFL, came back to defeat the Texans 32-27. With a 9-7 record, the Texans have already secured a postseason berth and the AFC South Division championship.

The Titans will don their vintage Oilers outfits for the first time this season when they play Sunday at noon. They last wore them in the regular-season finale against the Texans last year, when they overcame a deficit in Nashville to win 19–16 thanks to a field goal from Ka’imi Fairbairn that was 54 yards long.

With Texas native Earl Campbell leading the team as a standout running back and Bum Phillips as head coach, the Oilers, who started play in 1960 as a charter member of the previous American Football League, peaked in popularity in the late 1970s. Although the team kept the rights to the Oilers’ name and logo, team founder Bud Adams eventually relocated the team to Tennessee and changed its name to the Titans.

Later, Houston was given a new NFL team, the Texans, which started as an expansion team in 2002.
