University of Houston rescinding policy allowing hybrid work schedules for staff

The hybrid remote work policy at the University of Houston is being revoked.

In an email sent to workers on Friday, UH President Renu Khator declared that the institution will resume fully in-person operations after allowing staff to work partially from home and partially on campus for almost three years.

Beginning on March 1, employees will have to work on campus full-time.

In response to the COVID-19 epidemic, the institution instituted a mixed remote work policy in April 2022.

We will all be on campus to support our purpose of educating 47,000 students and assisting thousands of researchers in their work, just as we were before the pandemic, Khator stated in her email.

The action was taken two weeks after Houston Mayor John Whitmire announced that beginning in February, the majority of city employees would have to work full-time in the office.

President Donald Trump issued an executive order last week directing government departments to stop working remotely.

Last semester, the University of Texas at Austin began requiring almost all of its employees to work entirely on-site.

Neither faculty nor student employees are impacted by the University of Houston’s new on-campus work policy.Only staff members in departments like operations and maintenance are covered.

According to Khator’s email, the university was able to recover from the epidemic by using a mixed timetable.

“It is time to bring our energy back to campus and help each other to spur innovation and lead the university,” she stated.

According to its website, UH employs 5,200 students, more than 4,000 full- and part-time workers, and more than 2,500 faculty members.
