One thing unites the Ford pickup truck that crashed into onlookers on Bourbon Street in New Orleans and the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded at the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas: both were purportedly hired through Turo.
Through the peer-to-peer car-sharing website Turo, people can rent a variety of cars.
Since it enables car owners to display their vehicles online for prospective renters, many refer to the company as the Airbnb of automobiles. After submitting their details for validation, potential drivers can pick up the car.
Authorities have identified Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old Houston resident, as the driver of the white Ford pickup truck that struck defenseless onlookers in New Orleans at approximately 3:15 a.m. on New Year’s Day. The FBI said they found an ISIS flag in the subject’s car along with weapons and a possible IED. In the French Quarter, further possible IEDs were discovered.
According to the AP, the FBI on Thursday named Matthew LiveIsberger as the suspected occupant of the Tesla Cybertruck that blew up outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day.
Local and federal officials were yet to confirm any connection between the two incidents as of Thursday night.
Turo made the following remark as detectives try to piece together further hints for linkages between the two accidents that killed over 15 people:
We regret to inform you that Turo-rented vehicles were engaged in both the terrible attack in New Orleans this morning and the Tesla Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas this afternoon. The victims and their families are in our prayers and thoughts.
In order to disclose any information that can be useful in their investigations, our trust and safety team is actively collaborating with law enforcement. As of right now, we don’t know of any information linking the two events, and we don’t think either renter had a criminal history that would have made them a security risk.
Turo is committed to creating a reliable marketplace. Our top-notch trust and safety technology, as well as teams including seasoned former law enforcement personnel, enable us to continue upholding the highest standards in risk management.
These terrible events have devastated us, and we are committed to supporting the authorities in any way we can.
