The majority of Alabama’s public fishing lakes are scheduled to reopen for regular business in February, according to the state.
New details regarding the modification were provided by Jonathan Brown, State Lake Supervisor for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR)’s Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) Division.
According to Brown, “over the past year, many state lakes have undergone renovations and changes in management.” Certain lakes will either stay closed for maintenance and replenishment or reopen later this month. When organizing a fishing excursion, anglers should contact the district fisheries office or the specific lake to find out the operating schedule.
The public fishing lakes in Madison County and Walker County are scheduled to open on February 1 and February 15, respectively.
The majority of state-run recreational fishing lakes allow private boats to be launched for $3 and offer boats for rent for $5. To fish in the lakes, you need a state fishing license and a day permit. Fishing can be done from a bank, dock, rented boat, or personal vessel.
Numerous fish species, such as bream, large mouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, and rainbow trout in certain locations, can be found in Alabama’s public fishing lakes. The public fishing lakes in Alabama are smaller than larger bodies of water, so they heat up more faster, making for excellent fishing in the early spring.
