Some of the most intriguing underground locations in the Keystone State that are worth a visit include mines, museums, and caverns and caves.
Park for Wildlife & Penn’s Cave
The only all-water cave in the US is Penn’s Cave & Wildlife Park, which is located in Centre Hall, some 20 miles east of State College. This cave offers views of unusual limestone structures, pristine water, and a variety of fauna when taken on a guided boat excursion. In addition, the 1,600-acre park offers other activities like a miner’s maze, Jeep mountain trips, bus wildlife tours, and a well-stocked gift shop.
Museum of the Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad Museum, tucked away beneath the magnificent Belmont Mansion, tells the brave stories of men and women who supported African Americans who were enslaved and helped them achieve freedom in the 1800s. The museum, which is open Tuesday through Friday, features displays, relics, and records that illuminate the background and ongoing influence of this movement. There is no cost to enter.
Cole Run Waterfall
A stunning waterfall that spills over a rocky ledge is Cole Run Falls, which is tucked away in the Forbes State Forest. This location, which is easily accessible from the parking lot, provides beautiful scenery and the calming sounds of nature. The falls become a frozen wall of ice throughout the winter, when they are very charming. Cole Run Falls, approximately 25 miles southeast of Johnstown, is situated in Middlecreek Township and welcomes you to enjoy the splendor of the surrounding environment.
Crystal Cave
Situated near Kutztown, only 20 miles west of Allentown, Crystal Cave is a well-known and highly frequented cave in Pennsylvania. It features breathtaking calcium crystals and glistening, sparkling pillar formations. You can explore the cave with a guide who can tell you about its geology, history, and folklore. The cave complex also has a mini golf course, cafe, gift shop, and museum.
Laurel Caverns
Laurel Caverns, a three-mile maze of tubes and chambers, lays claim to being the largest cave in Pennsylvania. Diverse tour choices are available to suit varying degrees of activity, ranging from classic walking excursions to crawling and climbing spelunking expeditions. Across six counties, there are expansive vistas from the observation deck. Laurel Caverns, which is situated between Uniontown and Farmington off Route 40, offers an amazing underground trip.
